Spot the Marcel.
Today I’m posting two mixes which are pretty much poles apart from each other. They’re both excellent.
As if I hadn’t already convinced you of how great the Faktion MCR crew are, here’s a blinding mix from resident DJ the Aerobiq Mystiq for your consumption. This is his intro:
as promised… I exorcized this one the other day with most of the tracks I finished with at SSR. This one is for loud soundsystems and very dark rooms, all of the tracks are Faktion favourites old and new, maybe with more of an emphasis on the new. Many thanks if you’ve been down to one of our parties this year, you’ll know the vibe this was mixed for. I’ve got a couple more mixes to inflict on you soon, so keep an ear clean ;)”
Will do. Back in June, he followed Marcel Dettmann by playing ‘Spastik‘, and just a few weeks a go he hit it out of the park after Shed and Bodycode with an onslaught of massive choons, many of which you can hear in these 70 minutes:
The Aerobiq Mystiq (Faktion MCR) – Requiem For SSR Mix (direct link)
Function – Burn – Sandwell District
Delta Funktionen – That’s a lot of bait – Ann Aimee
Kassem Mosse – 578 – Mikrodisko
Scuba – From within [Marcel Dettmann RMX] – Hotflush recordings
Marcel Dettmann – Lattice – MDR
Peter Van Hoesen – Casual Care – Time to express
Substance – Relish – [Shed RMX] – Scion Versions
Delta Funktionen – Silhouette – Ann Aimee
Add Noise – Handwerk 3 – Handwerk
Monolake – Melting – Imbalance Computer Music
Substance & Vainqueur – Immersion – Scion Versions
Silent Servant – Doom Deferred – Sandwell District
Silent Servant – Violencia [Kalon RMX] – Sandwell District
Norman Nodge – NN 8.0 – MDR
Grungerman – Grungerman – Profan
That’s a tracklist to have you quaking in your boots alright. There’s a bit of a dodgy moment about a third of the way in, but otherwise the mixing is solid and the pace relentless. I’ll repeat the Aerobiq Mystiq’s sound advice: “If you like the tracks, go and buy vinyl copies!” Thanks to Faktion for more good listening and I wish you every success in the New Year.

And here’s a late entry into the ‘eurodeephouse mix of the year’ competition. For all the milk that’s been spilled (OH MY GOD!!) in 2008 over this particular ’sound’ (not least by me), there really have been some brilliant mixes to come out of it. Thomas Melchior’s Circoloco disc, everything Giles Smith touches, Philip Sherburne’s snail’s-pace summer grooves, Daniel Bell’s almost-genre-defining Bunker mix…and now this modyfier mix from Lucy, someone I’d never heard of before but now want to hear a lot more from.
Lucy – Modyfier Process Part 106 (modyfier blurb/download)
01. My My “Everybody’s talking” [Playhouse]
02. Dan Berkson, James What “Keep On feat. Robert Owens” (Two Armandillos Instrumental Remix) [Poker Flat]
03. Glimpse “We Existed feat. Taka Boom” [Four:Twenty]
04. Mutant Clan “Kenesai” [Connaisseur]
05. Dj Koze “Cicely” [NRK]
06. Lucy “Who’s the Liar” (Boris Hotton Remix) [Meerestief]
07. Lovebirds “The Beat Goes Boom” [Buzzin' Fly]
08. Morgan Geist “Detroit” (C2 Remix 1) [Environ]
09. Onur Ozer “Eclipse” (Loco Dice Remix) [Vakant]
10. Mathias Kaden “Detect This” (Decimal Remix) [Material]
11. Robert Dietz “Backseat” [Cecille Numbers]
It turns out Lucy is a man who has made several releases, by himself and with other amazing people like Rone. Having heard the remix of his ‘Who’s The Liar‘ track on this mix, I basically want to hear every single one of his releases…I guess I’d better get digging – first stop, myspace samples.
This modyfier mix is one hour of perfect sequencing. I’d like to know how it was recorded (if it’s vinyl then it’s super-impressive) but regardless of the method used, you can’t fault track selection like this. I’d almost go as far as to say this could be the mix of its type of the year. And you can get it for free on the internet! How awesome is that? Thank you very much to Lucy and the modyfier blog for a lovely hour’s worth of music. Seriously, this mix is so lovely!

Just to wedge this in here too…check out Rone’s recent contribution to the modyfier series too – it’s a beautiful liveset he put together and it sounds amazing. If you didn’t buy the Bora EP after last time I went crazy about it…well go and buy it now.

Holy shit this Aerobiq Mystiq mix !!! thanks a lot.
oh and if I remember correctly Lucy has some good remixes on Perspectiv I haven’t been keeping up to date with his latest stuff but the back catalogue is solid enough to look back on.
Hello there,
I’m speachless about your review…
Just thank you for listening so carefully a piece of my heart like this mix.
Best Regards
Lucy
thanks for the mystiq mix. it is a pretty much who’s who of people producing serious, mindfuck techno. rock! i havent listened to it yet, but looks like it’ll be a very good representation of what i think is one of the most interesting and dynamic sounds at the moment.
96kbps?! criminal!
you’ll have to take that up with the Faktion guys…he must have a higher quality version somewhere. but regardless i agree it’s a great sound, but oddly it’s a sound that hasn’t really been around in London that much…seems like it’s far more popular in Bristol/Manchester. We need someone to bring the noise to London!
Lucy – you’re very welcome.
i really cant handle 96kbps. it just sounds awful. and when the records are so good, it makes it even worse!
as for this sound, what the ssgs have termed – for lack of a better term – ‘mindfuck techno’ i think this it is something which is still bubbling and rising to the surface. you’ve got the sandwell district/birmingham sounds which is basically just downwards for the 21st century, the berghain/ostgut peeps, plus peter van hoesen, samuli kemppi, mosse, addnoise and a bunch of others, and then there are the sounds of people like dozzy, parker, cio d’or, dasha rush. not to mention some of the really interesting fusion with dubstep. seriously, so much good stuff going on. this is what is really exciting me right now.
kassem mosse – 578 sounds even better when mixed, a real dance floor destroyer. i like the “mindfuck techno” as chris describes it, i just hope it doesn’t sell out with producers coming out with slap dash attempts, badly produced which have been rushed just for the to make a quick £££. i say this as in leeds when im out im hearing more and more tracks from dettmann, nodge, klock, substance and im hearing this music in places that used to be playing “minimal”… its an exciting time for techno right now especially with the dubstep techno crossover which will only grow in 2009!
interesting point joe. i dont think any of the core guys will sell out, because they are so resolutely underground. but whether the sound gets diluted as it gets popularised is a question.
it seems a lot of it is restricted to Leeds/Manchester/Glasgow/the North in general. London’s not really picked it up alongside the dubstep, which is a shame. I missed a party last weekend which seemed like it was on the right track:

I think their next night is in January some time…I’ll definitely try and make it.
If anyone enjoyed the Lucy mix as much as I did, the new modyfier mix from alland byallo is also fantastic – especially the new Jay Haze/Ricardo collaboration, which sounds supersmooth. i want to get my mitts on that one.
